  • Your vehicle sticks when you try to change gears.
  • You smell burning transmission fluid. You can tell that it’s transmission fluid because it will smell a little like something electrical burning. It’s a quite unmistakable scent once you’ve experienced it.
  • Your transmission makes a great deal of noise, even if it’s in neutral.
  • When you’re driving, your car starts to make whining, clunking, or humming notices.
  • Your vehicle won’t go into gear.
  • If you have a manual vehicle, watch out for a dragging clutch, or a clutch that won’t leave the gear it’s currently in so that you can switch gears.
  • You notice leaking transmission fluid on the driveway or in the parking lot.
  • Your check engine light is on. This light can indicate a number of problems that don’t have anything to do with the transmission, but it can also be an early transmission warning sign.
